Spoilsport Records are elated to announce the release of Quality Used Car’s third LP One Hundred Million. Fronted by songwriter Francis Tait, One Hundred Million is another showcase of Tait and his band’s excellent songwriting ability, delivering 10 new tracks of their signature alt-country, garage rock, americana and art-rock.
Following on from their debut album Good Days/Bad Days, and their 2023 sophomore album Quality of Life, the band have played and toured with SG Goodman and MJ Lenderman, and had a slew of festival appearances at Boogie, Town Folk Festival, Gum Ball, Wonder Mountain and BMF. Slowly refining their craft in a live setting, the band return with an even more developed sound than their previous releases, committing to their shared vision, adding a horn section and pipes, and lyrically tackling a theme that almost makes it feel like a concept album.
Asking Tait about the record and the title One Hundred Million, he shared;
“It was around Christmas in 2023 and I was still working the delivery driving job I’d gotten to pay for the last Quality Used Cars album and the tour and all that. I’d had a pretty bad day already and had just dropped 10 20kg bags of sushi rice across the entrance of the Mornington Central shopping centre carpark when this lady pulls up beside me and goes “Powerball tonight. One hundred million” and drives off.
I thought about it all day. How nice it was and how we’re all as helpless as each other. And that there’s something nice about being all helpless under the enormity of life together. But hey then there’s also a one in one hundred and thirty four million, four hundred and ninety thousand and four hundred chance that you might actually win Powerball and buy one of those big Mornington beachfront houses. And we all have those odds together.
Then over the next few months Cars and I finished writing One Hundred Million. It’s all in some way about that helplessness, but also the fighting against the helplessness and sometimes finding comfort in the helplessness.
The entire album is dedicated to the Powerball lady. I can’t even remember what she looks like, but I hope she won.”
Quality Used Cars have always tackled lyrical songwriting with a sense of being down on your luck, an injection of humour, and also a gratefulness to life despite the hardships. One Hundred Million refines their craft perfectly, as they expand instrumentally to create an astonishingly memorable and mature third record.
