Sonic Sherpa is an Australian record store that’s been brightening the Brisbane suburb of Stones Corner since 2015 (although the team has over a decade’s shared music retail experience from owning/running Skinnys in the Brisbane CBD back in the day).

We have a large and eclectic range of new and pre-loved vinyl on hand, as well as stocking turntables, CDs, books, DVDs and music-related t-shirts and paraphernalia. Sonic Sherpa also curates ranges for the region’s larger music festivals such as Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival (Byron Bay), CMC Rocks, Gympie Muster, Tamworth Country Music Festival and many more such gatherings.

Norwegian singer-songwriter Marie Ringheim introduced herself to the world with indie-pop persona @girlinred with her stunning indie debut ‘If I Could Make It Go Quiet’ (2021), and has since jumped to the major label realms for its long-awaited follow-up ‘I’m Doing It Again Baby!’ (out courtesy @sonymusicaustralia! It follows the same angsty template as its predecessor - Rolling Stone’s 4-star review reckons “As on her debut, Girl in Red really shines when she steps up the energy level in pissed-off songs where she’s getting her heart kicked around” - so if you’re feeling a bit unlucky in love or just pissed off at the modern world let Girl In Red balm those wounds, she’s doing it again baby!

Excellent Naarm outfit @savagedrinks have become loved for both only their gothic-tinged take on alt-country but also their intensely brooding live shows, and during the early onset of COVID in 2020 they pulled out all stops inside an empty Hamer Hall (at Melbourne’s Art Centre) - lockdowns having just returned - which was recorded and then released on vinyl as ‘Live at Hamer Hall’! Despite the beautiful room being empty Cash and the band deliver an angsty and explosive performance - NME reckoned, “On ‘Live At Hamer Hall’, Savage morphs from howling punk banshee (‘Rat-a-tat-tat’), to yearning lover (‘February’) to Cartman-voiced environmentalist (new song ‘Fun In The Sun’), all the while kicking against the pricks” - so grab a copy and revel in one of the few positives to come out of those horrific pandemic years!

Washington DC hardcore punk/reggae pioneers @badbrainsofficial cut a swathe through the late-‘70s and beyond with their distinctive blend of punk, reggae, metal and funk, originally dropping their acclaimed eponymous debut album in 1982 as a cassette-only release. It ended up being one of the most influential heavy releases ever - much-missed Beastie Boy Adam Yaunch called it “the best punk/hardcore album of all time” - and a couple of years back @orgmusic reissued it on limited edition ‘banana peel yellow vinyl’, so getting down with H.R. and the gang has never been so colour-coordinated!

Australia’s rock’n’roll royals @acdc recently racked up 50 years of raucous racket and celebrated with a run of rad gold vinyl reissues, including this killer bad boy ‘AC/DC Live’ which originally came out in 1992! It was documenting shows from the year before while they were on the Razors Edge World Tour and found them in fine form - a Pop Matters review of a 2003 reissue gushed “Live delivers exactly what fans have come to expect from their pint sized Aussie heroes, two hours of rollicking musical grandiosity punctuated by power chording from the Netherworld” - so wish Angus and the boys a happy 50th by grabbing a copy of ‘AC/DC Live’ and blasting it loud, it’ll shake you all night long!

CATCH O’ THE DAY!
When legendary local outfit The Saints imploded over in the UK at the tail-end of the ‘70s founding guitarist @edkuepper returned to Australia and put together a new group Laughing Clowns, eschewing his former band’s proto-punk in favour of a more avant-garde - and completely distinctive - amalgam of styles such as free jazz, bluegrass and krautrock. Right on 40 years ago in April, 1984 they released their acclaimed second album ‘Law Of Nature’ - which went to #1 on the Australian indie album chart - the collection described by Ed as drawing on his memories of growing up in the semi-rural suburbs of Brisbane, and it’s now been reissued on vinyl (for the first time since the ‘80s) and we have copies on limited edition blue vinyl! Classic underground Oz rock!

Back in February much-loved Sydney indie rockers @middlekidsmusic released their third album ‘Faith Crisis Part 1’ (through @luckynumbermusic /@emimusicau), which found them experimenting with synths and organs for the first time. Whilst I may feature change it seems others are more open-minded as the change has been widely accepted - Treble Zine reckon that the album “is possessed by a subtle perfection that becomes clearer with each listen and finds the group sharpening their songwriting while retaining their immediacy” - and we have copies on limited edition indie exclusive warm yellow vinyl, as the late great George Michael kinda said you gotta have Faith (Crisis Part 1)!

Esteemed local outfit @hungrykidsofhungary represented Brissie with distinction during the mid-‘00s indie-pop explosion, and it’s awesome that their acclaimed 2010 debut ‘Escapades’ was recently given its first vinyl release (by the team at @impressedrecordings)! Recorded here in Meanjin with local producer Matt Redlich it received great coverage at the time - Time Off’s 5/5 review called it “a meticulously crafted, stunningly accomplished endeavor” - and it rose to #24 on the national album chart, this awesome blast from the past now available on limited edition (individually-numbered run of 400) clear turquoise heavyweight vinyl with lyric insert and bespoke essay!
